Allie Condie's Matched is one of the best YA books of 2010. The story centers around a girl named Cassia who lives in a society where all the decisions are made for you. Your job, who you love, when you die. And Cassia has always trusted The Society, that is until her Matching banquet comes along and instead of seeing one boy on her little screen she sees two. Now doubts start to surface, is the Society all that's cracked up to be? Whats hidden below the glossy exterior? Is the perfect life, perfect health, and perfect mate worth your freedom?
Yes, it's awesome! An incredible book, for some it may even be better than The Hunger Games; both are in the same category. Only that Matched is more passive aggressive. It's kind of like she is just realizing all the problems that lie inside the perfect bubble, and getting restless. Rebellion! Hahaha anyways, I loved this book so much I asked Allie Condie for an interview, and her, being so freaking nice and all, agreed!
- Do you like mythology? I saw some references to the myth of Sisyphus in the reading and I thought it was very interesting. If you do like myth which is your favorite myth?
While I’m no expert, I do love mythology—it was one of my favorite things to teach back when I was teaching high school. I don’t know if I have a favorite myth, but I do really like the Sisyphus one. Sometimes it feels like we all have those times when we’re just pushing that rock as hard as we can.
- Is there anything you changed about Matched at the lest second? Like, the title, characters, etc.
There were definitely things that changed during the editorial process, but I don’t think that anything changed at the last second… but one thing I do always leave until the very last minute is writing the acknowledgment page. I don’t know why that part always seems so scary. I think it’s because I don’t want to leave anyone out!
- Is you favorite color green? What does the color green symbolize in the novel?
My favorite color is actually blue, but I also love green (particularly the lovely shade of green the designers used on the cover of Matched). The color green symbolizes new growth and awakening in the novel.
- Will you ever tell us about the other time they took the red pill?
Yes! I will. =D
- Have you ever thought about how your characters would look if your book were made into a movie? Who would play them?
I’ve been getting some great suggestions from readers. One suggestion that I really liked was Chord Overstreet for Xander.
I haven’t seen much Glee, but he certainly looks perfect for the part. I’ve also thought that Ian McKellan would be awesome for Grandfather.
