"Despite the threat of the sharp canines, I sensed a mischievous twinkle in the smile that spread across Elia's face. "It's a hard habit to break, this desire to misdirect. I spent centuries doing only precisely as I was told, nothing more."
"And you're still doing it." I laughed. This time I couldn't hold back the urge and nudged him playfully. "Answer the question, Elias. Are you human?"
He startled when I mentioned his name, almost as if instead of giving him a gentle poke, I'd slapped him in the face. Straightening, his eyes narrowed. His words, when they came, were very precise and clipped. "I am not. Nor have I ever been. Not the way you seem to be asking, at any rate."
"Not human. I shivered, withdrawing deeper into myself. Not human.
"Now grant me a question of my own, my lady. Is it better to serve in Heaven or rule in hell?"
Confused, I looked up to ask him what he meant, when suddenly I heard a shout in the distance.
"Get away from her, demon!"
The coven had found us. I could hear footfalls crashing through the underbrush. People were shouting. Magic was revving up; I felt it like static electricity building in the air. I stood up to ward them off, to tell them that it was okay, that Elias and I were just talking-
But he was already gone."

"This was certainly a disturbing development. I couldn't even kiss a boy without wanting to bite him. To say the least, this was going to be hell on my love life. Closing the toilet seat, I sat down dejectedly with my head in my hands. The second my palms hit my cheeks, my damn fangs bit my tongue. "Ow. Goddamn it!"
There was a soft knock at the door. "Are you okay in there?"
"No, this sucks! I bit my own stupid tongue." Okay, I could have edited that to make more sense, but I was startled by his sudden presence and incredibly frustrated by this situation. Did I ask to be a vampire? No. In fact, I hadn't even considered it an option until yesterday. Now everything was fangs, blood, and weird caves. I just wanted to make out a little more with a cool, cute boy.
"Can I help?" Nikolai asked from the other side of the door. Great. Just great. I wiped the well of tears from the corner of my eye. "I mean...you can tell me if you think I'm a lousy kisser or whatever."
I whipped open the door, nearly pulling it from the hinges. "No! I like you! I..." I faltered because he'd been trying to peer through the keyhole and he stood up suddenly, guiltily.
His eyes were wide and he pointed at my mouth. "Your, um, fangs are showing."
"oh." My hand flew to cover my mouth. "Oh, crap."

The book's summary:
On her sixteenth birthday, Anastasija Parker's present winds up being the shock of a lifetime. When her mom referred to her absentee dad as a deadbeat it was actually half true -- he's a vampire. And a king, no less. A king who wants his daughter to assume her rightful position at his side. But, thanks to Ana's mother, the blood of a witch also runs through her veins....
Too bad vampires and witches are mortal enemies.
With her parents gearing up for an all out brawl over her destiny, Ana's about ready to scream. But things get even crazier when a male witch and a brooding bad boy vampire start vying for her affection. Then the barely leashed tension between the vampires and the witches starts to boil over, and Ana has to figure out once and for all if she wants to become heir to her dad's throne. And deciding your eternal destiny is a pretty big deal for a girl who just wants to get through high school.
